North Alabama is home to the HudsonAlpha Institute for Biotechnology, a nationally recognized center for genomic research, education, entrepreneurship, and commercialization. HudsonAlpha brings researchers and entrepreneurs together in a collaborative life-sciences environment that includes more than 50 associate companies on its Huntsville campus.
The region’s growing life-sciences sector encompasses pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, medical devices and equipment, research and testing laboratories, bioscience distribution, and agricultural biotechnology. Research capabilities at HudsonAlpha, Alabama A&M University, and The University of Alabama in Huntsville further support innovation, workforce development, and continued growth within the sector.
North Alabama’s life-sciences presence is entering a new era with Eli Lilly and Company’s planned investment of more than $6 billion in an advanced pharmaceutical manufacturing campus in Huntsville-Limestone County-the largest initial capital investment in Alabama history. The project is expected to create 450 jobs and will manufacture small-molecule synthetic and peptide medicines, including oral GLP-1 products. The investment adds large-scale pharmaceutical manufacturing to a regional life-sciences ecosystem already built around research, discovery, entrepreneurship, and technology development.
