North Alabama is served by two Class I railroads, CSX and Norfolk Southern, providing freight connections for plastics, chemicals, steel, agricultural products, and a wide range of other commodities. Shortline railroads further extend service throughout the region, including bulk transloading capabilities.
Major switching yards are located in Sheffield, Alabama; Decatur, Alabama; and nearby in Chattanooga, Tennessee. Norfolk Southern also serves as the main access ramp for the International Intermodal Center (IIC) at the Port of Huntsville, connecting rail, air cargo, and highway transportation in one strategic location.
NAIDA maintains information on all rail-served industrial sites and buildings throughout North Alabama and can help identify locations that best align with a project’s transportation and logistics requirements.
